SecurityArts welcomes you! We are a team of developers of the QUANTUM multifunctional crypto device. We hope you did not get here by chance and already are a proud owner of a QUANTUM device or simply share interest in information security. In any case here’s a couple of useful tips for you to help protect your private data and money.

According to statistics, 81% of data leaks occur due to the use of weak and unreliable passwords. A big problem exists because people often underestimate hackers’ ability to guess or steal passwords and very often use the same password for all their accounts. The problem gets even worse when employees share the same password for personal and business use. This way, attacker can access sensitive corporate data, by hacking any personal and less secure user account. Hence, the first tip:

  • Always use different and complex passwords for different accounts. Since an average person cannot remember more than 10-20 complicated passwords, software password managers have been developed to solve this problem, and they do their job well. But, unfortunately, they are often hacked by hackers who immediately get all the passwords in one place. Therefore, our team decided to develop a hardware password manager that stores all the data encrypted in its internal memory, and never stores them on computer or cloud service, where they can become an easy prey for hackers or viruses. Only one PIN code for you to remember to access the device!

However, even the use of complex passwords does not guarantee full security. After all, today there are many methods for stealing passwords, such as brute force, spoofing, phishing, social engineering, and all sorts of hybrid methods and, unfortunately, there is no universal and 100% reliable method of protection against them. But there is a method that considerably complicates the job for intruders and protects against a great deal of attacks. Therefore, our next advice is to

  • Use 2FA (two-factor authentication). 2FA is a user identification method that uses two different types of authentication data. Login and password are usually the first one. The second type of data may be, for example, a one-time code received via email or SMS (actually a weak method), a code generated by a special application on a phone such as Google Authenticator (a decent method, but also with some weaknesses), biometric data (fingerprint or retina image – an expensive method), or a specific USB device (one of the most reliable methods).

SMS codes are no longer considered to be secure and are not recommended for use; there are many ways that SMS messages can be intercepted by an attacker. SMS codes are definitely better than nothing, but not as secure as TOTP or U2F.

Although 2FA significantly improves the account security, the additional step of verification creates some inconvenience for users (for example, you need to get the phone and manually enter the code), so they often ignore this method thus compromising safety. To solve this problem, we implemented automatic 2FA combined with password manager functionality, which makes both steps easy for you, requiring to press only one button on the device.

QUANTUM already supports three most reliable 2FA methods: HOTP and TOTP (the same as the Google Authenticator) and FIDO U2F, but has a significant safety advantage over using Google Authenticator on the phone. To set up HOTP/TOTP on your phone you need to enter a secret key, which can be stolen by viruses or spyware during typing. QUANTUM allows you to manually enter this key on the device, which completely excludes the possibility of its interception.

FIDO U2F provides a high level of security, but the vast majority of hardware keys that support it are quite simple and have no theft protection. It’s enough for an attacker to get physical access to the key to use it. QUANTUM is securely protected by a PIN code!

Next, we will tell you more about storing and using cryptocurrency. People who are new to cryptocurrency and just bought or are going to buy a certain amount of coins have a reasonable question – what is the best way for storing it? There are several ways to store cryptocurrency, such as online wallets, cryptocurrency exchanges, special applications, hardware wallets, and even paper wallets. A wallet is needed to store a private key, which is actually a piece of secret information that confirms your right to spend coins, and in most cases it’s just a big number 32 bytes long. Therefore, we need a place where we can safely and securely store these 32 bytes of data.

  • Online wallets – private keys of your wallet are stored online on servers of a particular service you use. You can access your wallet at any time by using only login and password. These wallets are quite easy to use but have significant drawbacks – you entrust your funds to a third party. Since they also often become victims of intruders and hackers, we do not recommend keeping large amounts of money using online wallets.
  • Cryptocurrency exchanges – private keys are stored by the exchange operator, but in most cases, you do not have direct access to them. However, you always have the opportunity to trade, which is useful for traders, who make money on purchase and sale operations. But, unfortunately, not every exchange can fully guarantee the safety of your funds. Almost all exchanges are faced with attacks that lead to loss of funds by users.
  • Application wallets – these are local desktop or mobile applications that store private keys on your PC or phone. The main risk here is that the safety of your money completely depends on the reliability of your PC. Today there are many viruses and malware that can easily steal a private key from your PC. Almost any home PCs could be affected by Spectre or Meltdown vulnerability.
  • Hardware wallets – are specialized devices, mostly a regular flash drive size, where you can store money safely and use them connected to PC or smartphone/tablet. They keep private keys separate from the vulnerable equipment connected to the Internet, and keys are used only in a protected environment inside of the device. Currently, this is one of the most reliable methods for storing cryptocurrency.
  • Paper wallets – are simply pieces of paper where public and private keys are printed, in the form of a QR code and/or a phrase from 12 to 24 words. An advantage of a paper wallet is that the keys are not stored on computer or network and therefore can’t be hijacked by hackers. However, such wallets should be kept away from fire or water for obvious reasons. They are also not user friendly and more suitable for long-term backup storage.

Summarizing the above: hardware wallets are more recommended to store cryptocurrency since they combine high level of security and ease of use. Also, as a backup method, you can use a paper wallet and store it in a safe box or a bank.

We have added wallets functionality to QUANTUM to address the problem of cryptocurrency storage. It is multicurrency, which allows you to simultaneously store different types of currencies, and this list will be constantly increasing. We were guided by the principles of maximum safety and reliability during development process, so it includes several levels of protection.

Especially for users with the extreme level of paranoia we came up with an idea of offline mode, in which QUANTUM operates without connecting to PC, powered from power bank or phone charger. You can create a new wallet using device UI, display its addresses as a QR code on LCD, scan it using smartphone and transfer funds to it. You can also display private key and manually rewrite it on paper for backup storage and be 100% sure that not any virus will intercept it.

Lastly, the most important advice.
ALWAYS DO BACKUP COPIES. Any device, even the most reliable one, can fail. However, this is not a problem in case of QUANTUM, since you can always restore data from a backup to a new device. We have developed a method for reserving all data to a separate extra-encrypted file and your data is never stored in a cloud service or on our servers.

Cryptocurrency wallet

Hardware wallet is the most secure way of storing and managing cryptocurrency, which combines high security level with convenience. Remote hacking and possibility of unauthorized access is almost eliminated by several levels of security.

  • Multi-currency – supports BitcoinEthereumBitcoin CashEOSLitecoinDashDogeCoinRipple and Stakenet XSN. It allows you to receive and send money, check your balance, check cryptocurrency rate, and many more. New cryptocurrency support will be added via regular device updates.
  • Secure – private keys for money transfer are used inside only and are never exposed. This guarantees safe money storing.
  • Reliable – backup all your data to extra encrypted file and restore it to any other QUANTUM device. You can also manually write down your private key from screen on a sheet of paper as an additional backup option.
  • Simple and transparent – manage your money using a simple device and convenient Quantum Manager application. Check transaction information on the QUANTUM LCD and confirm it by pressing device buttons. There is no possibility to imperceptibly modify transactions.

Password manager

QUANTUM emulates standard USB keyboard and types your passwords on PC for you as well as auto fills payments and logging forms by one button press. Only one PIN code to remember, to access the device.

Hardware password manager advantages:

  • More secure – your essential data are not stored on PC or cloud service, which decreases the number of possible attack vectors. Your data security does not depend on your PC security now.
  • More reliable – the only thing that hacker or virus cannot do with your PC is to physically press a button. Only you can confirm input by pressing the device button.
  • Multiplatform – it does not require additional drivers and is supported by Windows, Mac, Linux and Android devices; being recognized as an ordinary USB HID keyboard it can operate with almost any platform.
  • Versatile – stores not only passwords but any other data, like logins, web site URLs, phone numbers, passport and ID data, credit cards, or other text strings up to 1000 symbols each.

QUANTUM is designed to provide the highest security level with maximum convenience. For example, your device automatically enters 2FA mode after password mode, so you pass two security levels by only one button press.

2FA Token

2FA or two-factor authentication is an additional step of user verification before account access. To confirm user identity, login and password is usually enough – this is called one-factor authentication. 2FA requires additional piece of evidence (or factor): SMS code, biometric data – fingerprint, or a special hardware key – USB token.

QUANTUM supports the following 2FA methods:

  • FIDO U2F is an open two-factor authentication standard using specialized USB hardware device (token), that does all cryptography by itself and holds private keys inside. Supported by Google, Facebook, Github, Dropbox, and others. U2F support can be added to almost any web service by using JavaScript API.
  • HOTP – is a one-time password (OTP) algorithm based on hash-based message authentication codes (HMAC). It is supposed to be reliable and common crypto attacks resistant, and supported by a big amount of web services.
  • TOTP – is an extension of the HMAC-based one-time password algorithm (HOTP) generating a one-time password by instead taking uniqueness from the current time. Also supposed to be reliable and common crypto attacks resistant, and supported by a big amount of web services.

Due to unique combination of password manager with 2FA functionality QUANTUM guarantees exceptional safety of your accounts and private data combined with comfortable use.

Activate new device

All QUANTUM devices are shipped inactivated. Warranty period (6 month) starts from the moment of activation. This makes warranty period independent from delivery or stockage time. Also, this is the way to make sure that your device is genuine.

To activate new device, you need to have:

  • QUANTUM device with micro USB cable.
  • Computer (Windows, Linux or Mac OS) connected to internet.
  • Installed Quantum Manager.

Connect the QUANTUM to PC using USB cable and wait until standard USB driver is installed, which will take about 1 minute. Launch Quantum Manager and in a drop-down window you will see a 6-digit activation code that should be entered in your device.

Press UP/DOWN buttons on the device to choose the first symbol, press OK to confirm the symbol or CANCEL to erase it. Repeat the process until all symbols are done. Hold OK button to confirm the code.

Enter PIN code

PIN code protects your device from unauthorized access. Also, it is a key that is used to crypt all your data inside. This is the only code you need to remember. Every time you connect the device to PC, you need to enter it to access your private data.

  • Press UP/DOWN buttons on the device to choose the first symbol.
  • Press OK button to confirm or CANCEL to erase the symbol.
  • Repeat the process until all symbols are done.
  • Hold OK button to confirm PIN code.

To prevent brute force attacks, QUANTUM is blocked for some amount of time after every failed attempt: after first attempt – for 1 second, then 2 seconds, 4 seconds and so on. Each failed attempt doubles the blocking time. For example, the device is blocked for 17 minutes (1024 seconds) after 10 attempts, and for 9 hours after 15 attempts.

Useful advices:

  • Use PINs 6 – 20 symbols long.
  • Always choose your PIN code by yourself.
  • Use symbol combinations: digits 0..9, chars A..Z or a..z and special symbols ~!@#$?%^&*()[]{}/|<>-_+=”‘
  • Do not use easy to guess combinations like 000000, 123456 or AAAAAA, etc.

The PIN code is used as data cryptography key only, and is never stored inside the device, so nobody can access your QUANTUM, if it is lost or stolen, without PIN code.

Add new user

You need to add a new user and set PIN code for this user before you can start using your device.

  • In the main menu select Settings > Add user.
  • Choose Yes or No for With admin rights? option.
  • Enter unique user name, 17 symbols max.
  • Choose and enter unique PIN code for that user.
  • Confirm your PIN code by entering it once more.

The device can store data for multiple users, and these users may virtually be not aware of each other. Depending on the PIN code you entered on start, the data of a particular user will be available in the device menu. For example, you can store real data using PIN code 123456 and additionally fake data using ABCDEF code, and in case of being forced to disclose your PIN, you can share the ABCDEF, saving your real data and maybe even life.

The number of users is limited only by the device memory capacity. The current version can store up to 1000 average users, each using one password.

Any user can have admin rights, which allow to change kill PIN, clear all memory and do backup/restore. The first user gets admin rights by default. Next, you have to choose whether new user will have admin rights or not. New users will not have admin rights if you add them without having admin rights.

QUANTUM modes

PC Mode

MENU Mode

You can use QUANTUM i two modes:

PC Mode – the device is operated using Quantum Manager application. Only sometimes you have to press OK button on the device to confirm critical operation (when the device LCD is blinking). Press and hold UP + OK buttons simultaneously to exit PC mode and enter MENU mode.

MENU Mode – the device is operated using device buttons and UI menu. To be sure that no essential data is stolen by viruses or malware, you can connect QUANTUM to power bank or phone charger, when making the most critical operations. Choose PC Mode in the main menu to exit MENU mode and enter PC mode.

Main menu structure

Press device UP/DOWN buttons to navigate through the main menu. Press ОК to select item or CANCEL to exit submenu.

Passwords

All user passwords are displayed in this menu. To type it on PC just select the needed one and press OK button. QUANTUM emulates pressing USB keyboard buttons displaying the selected password on PC. The word “Password” here is a general term; you can store any essential text data, up to 1000 symbols each, and display them on PC or device LCD.

Add – add new password. You need to enter password name and password. You can generate random password also, just select maximum length and symbols to use in additional menu after entering name.

  • Max name length: 20 symbols.
  • Max password length: 1000 symbols.
  • Max passwords for one user: 100.

To display additional menu for selected password press and hold OK button for 3 seconds. Using this menu, you can view and delete selected password, and add 2FA. To add 2FA select 2FA type:

  • FIDO U2F – device will switch to FIDO U2F USB mode. You need to press device OK button to confirm operation if Register U2F? or Confirm U2F? is blinking on the LCD. Press CANCEL button anytime to get back to menu mode without confirmation.
  • Google Auth TOTP – enter 2FA TOTP key.
  • Google Auth HOTP – enter 2FA HOTP key.

Wallets

QUANTUM menu mode is the safest way to manage cryptocurrency. For example, you can create new random wallet and display address QR code on the device LCD. Then, scan this code using smartphone and send money to this wallet. Display wallet private key on the device LCD and manually make paper copy for additional backup. Thereby, you will be 100% sure that your device has never been connected to PC and your money cannot be stolen by viruses.

Also, you can manually enter private key of already existing or paper backup wallet. Although manual entry is slow and inconvenient, it provides the most secure way for cryptocurrency storing.

Add – add new wallet. You need to choose cryptocurrency type, enter name and private key in WIFHEX or SEED phrase format. You can also generate random private key for new wallet.

  • Max name length: 15 symbols + coin type.
  • Max wallets for one user: 100.
  • Supported cryptocurrency: BTC, ETH, LTC, BCH, XRP, EOS, DASH, DOGE, XSN.

To display additional menu for selected wallet, press OK button. Using this menu, you can:

  • Show address – show wallet address on the device LCD.
  • Show QR code – show wallet address QR code on the device LCD.
  • Print address – print wallet address to PC.
  • Show private key – show private key on the device LCD. (WIFHEX or SEED phrase).
  • Print private key – print private key to PC.
    ATTENTION!!! It is not safe to print private key to PC. Make sure that there are no spyware or malware that could steal your key.
  • Delete wallet – delete selected wallet.

Settings

Language – Choose the main menu language: English or Ukrainian.

Mac OS Left Shift – Prints character “z” – the next character on the keyboard to the right of the left Shift. Used to identify keyboard for Mac OS.

Mac OS Right Shift – Prints character “/” – the next character on the keyboard to the left of the right Shift. Used to identify keyboard for Mac OS.

Print delay – set additional delay (in milliseconds) after every symbol printed over USB. Could be useful when using device with smartphone or tablet. Some android devices are not able to receive and manage data from USB keyboard so fast. The delay value is selected experimentally. The value 5 is suitable for most cases. If you use device with PC this value can be set to 0.

Rotate screen – rotate LCD image by 180° buttons functionality will change accordingly..

Screen saver – set LCD timeout (in seconds), if no device activity, LCD will be turned off. Press any button to turn it on again. LCD is never turned off if this parameter is set to 0. Device LCD is made with OLED technology and brightness degradation may occur with time. Therefore, we recommend setting this value to 60 to avoid degradation.

Auto exit – set device timeout (in seconds), if no device activity user will be logout. Could be useful if you forgot your device connected to PC. Device ignores this parameter if value is 0.

Add user – add new user. You need to enter user name and PIN code for new user 2 times.

Clear all memory – clear all memory of all users. Only users with admin right can perform this operation.

Set kill password – kill password is a special PIN which clear all data memory if you enter it on start. Only users with admin right can change this PIN. By default, is set to KILLEMALL and we strongly recommend to change it.

Help

Help – link to website for more information and updates.

Serial number – device unique serial number (24 symbols).

About – firmware version and some info about developers.

Update – switch device to firmware update mode. “HID Boot mode” is shown on LCD.

Logout

Logout current user from device.

PC mode

Switch device to PC mode for operations with Quantum Manager.

Quantum Manager

Quantum Manager is a simple and convenient desktop application for QUANTUM device, used for managing passwords, sending and receiving cryptocurrency, checking balance, making backup/restore and much more.

Manager is written on JavaScript and is open source, you can review or modify it and make improvements.

Also, detailed QUANTUM USB protocol documentation is available, so developers can integrate QUANTUM with third party services.

Download and install

Open downloads page, select your platform and download installation file.

  • Windows – double click the downloaded file. Press Run anyway or Yes if a warning displays and wait until the process is finished.
     
  • Mac OS – double click the downloaded file. Drag and drop the Quantum Manager application to the Applications folder. Depending on your OS version, the warning message displays. Click Open or Yes to allow the installation. Open application from Launchpad or Spotlight.
     
  • Linux – Set executable attribute for downloaded file, in terminal: chmod +x QuantumManager_linux.AppImage
    Double click AppImage file to launch it or use terminal.
     

    To allow non-root users access QUANTUM, create a udev rule for the device. This rule is a text file placed in /etc/udev/rules.d

     

    Save above text to /etc/udev/rules.d/quantum.rules, unplug the device, and reload the rules with: sudo udevadm control –reload-rules

First steps

  • Connect QUANTUM to PC using USB cable, enter PIN code and set PC mode. Wait until standard USB driver is installed if you connect device for the first time.
  • Launch Quantum Manager.

General tab

  • General device information is displayed in this tab:

    • User name – current user name.
    • Admin rights – user admin rights.
    • Wallets count – number of user wallets.
    • Passwords count – number of user passwords.
    • Firmware version – device current firmware version.

    • Add user – add new user. You need to enter user name and 2 times PIN code on the device.
    • About – application version and device serial number.
    • Check for updates – QUANTUM firmware update.

Firmware update

  • Firmware update is the way to add new functionality and make improvements for your device, for example new cryptocurrency support or 2FA methods. On start Quantum Manager displays corresponding message in left bottom corner, if new firmware version is available.

    To update device click Check for updates, then in drop-down window you will see firmware current and updated versions. Click Start to begin update process.

     

    Device enters update mode (Boot mode). Wait until the process is finished. Device is rebooted after successful update. Enter PIN code and enjoy new functionality.

    If during update process some errors have occurred, for example due to accidentally disconnected cable or other circumstance, just repeat the update process.

Passwords tab

  • All user passwords are displayed in this tab. Select needed password from the left-side list to display it or make other operations or add/delete 2FA for it.

    • Name: – selected password name.
    • Password: – password by itself.
    • Type 2FA – password 2FA type.
    • Show password – show selected password. You need to confirm this operation by pressing device OK button.
    • Copy to clipboard – copy password to clipboard. You need to confirm this operation by pressing device OK button.
    • Add 2FA/Delete 2FA – add or delete 2FA.
    • Delete password – delete selected password.

    + add password – add new password. Select Password type in drop-down window:

    • Password – ordinary password. Enter Password name, and Password by itself.
      If Add ENTER key is selected, QUANTUM will emulate keyboard ENTER button press after each password print to PC.
       
    • Random password – generate random password. You need to enter password name, password length (1 – 1000), and select symbols sets to use.
       
    • Login and password – add login and password. You need to enter name, login and password. If this kind of password is printed to PC, login is printed first, then TAB button press is emulated, and then password is printed. If Add ENTER key is selected, ENTER button press is emulated in the end. Could be used to auto fill login forms.
       
    • Login and password + URL – add login, password and URL. You need to enter name, login/password and URL. If this kind of password is printed to PC, URL is printed first, than you need to press device OK button, then login is printed, then TAB button press is emulated, and then password is printed. If Add ENTER key is selected, ENTER button press is emulated in the end.
       

    Word “Password” is a general term. You can store any essential text data, for example website URLs, phone numbers, passport data, credit cards, or other text records up to 1000 symbols each.

    ATTENTION!!! It is not safe to show or input password on PC, make sure that there are no spyware or malware that could steal it. You can safely perform this operation in MENU mode using device UI.

Add 2FA

  • Select password to add 2FA to and press Add 2FA button. Select 2FA Type in drop-down window:

     
    • U2F – press ОК button in drop-down window, device will switch to FIDO U2F USB mode and corresponding message will be displayed on the LCD. You need to press device OK button to confirm operation if Register U2F? or Confirm U2F? is blinking on the LCD. Press CANCEL button anytime to get back to PC mode without confirmation.
    • TOTP – enter 2FA TOTP Key and press ОК.
    • HOTP – enter 2FA HOTP Key and press ОК.

    ATTENTION!!! It is not safe to input 2FA key on PC, make sure that there are no spyware or malware that could steal it. You can safely perform this operation in MENU mode using device UI.

Wallets tab

  • All user wallets are displayed in this tab. Select needed wallet from the left-side list to display it or make other operations.

    • Name – selected wallet name.
    • Type – cryptocurrency type.
    • Balance – wallet balance.
    • Addr – wallet address. Click on it to copy to clipboard.
      Also, this address is encoded in a QR code on the right.
    • Address – wallet address to send money to.
    • Amount – amount to send.
    • Fee – recommended transaction fee.

    Send – send money.

    Block explorer – open block explorer for selected wallet in browser.

    Delete wallet – delete selected wallet. You need to confirm this operation by pressing device OK button.

    Show wallet key – show wallet private key. You need to confirm this operation by pressing device OK button.
    ATTENTION!!! It is not safe to show private key on PC, make sure that there are no spyware or malware that could steal it. You can safely display private key on device LCD in MENU mode.

    + add wallet – add new wallet. Select cryptocurrency type in drop-down window and enter Wallet name. Enter Private key in form of WIFHEX or SEED phrase.

     

    Also, you can create random private key for new wallet. Select Generate random wallet option for this.
    If Testnet option is selected, wallet will be created for so called Testnet, which allows you to experiment with cryptocurrency without risk of losing real money.

    ATTENTION!!! It is not safe to enter private key on PC, make sure that there are no spyware or malware that could steal it. You can safely perform this operation in MENU mode, using device UI. However, generating random wallet is safe in any mode.

Send money

  • To send money you need to enter destination address to Address field and enter amount of money to send. Also you can modify transaction fee. Press Send button.

    Next you need to press device buttons randomly, when corresponding message on LCD is displayed. This is required to generate random numbers for cryptography algorithm for transaction signing.

    You will see additional transaction information in drop-down window:

    Amount and destination address will be displayed on device. Press UP/DOWN buttons to review all destination addresses. The last address is sender’s address and is used to get remainder.

    Press device CANCEL button to cancel transaction or OK button to confirm it. Signed HEX transaction will be displayed in Transaction field after confirmation.

    Press Broadcast button to submit transaction to blockchain, to send money. Then you will see confirmation or error message in right-bottom corner.

    Also, you can copy signed transaction to clipboard and use third party block explorer to broadcast it.

    As it takes a while for the transaction to be processed in the blockchain, the balance of the wallet will not change immediately. We recommend using block explorer to check transaction status.

Conection problem

  • The list of top 200 cryptocurrencies (from coinmarketcap.com) is displayed in this tab.
    It refreshes every 5 minutes.

    • Name – cryptocurrency name.
    • Symbol – coin ticker.
    • Price – coin price.
    • Market Cap – coin market capitalization.
    • Volume (24H) – trades volume per day.
    • Change (24H) – Coin price change per day.

    The list can be sorted ascending or descending by clicking on the header for a particular parameter.

Market Data tab

  • You can set device settings in this tab or make user data backup/restore.

    • Language – set menu language: English or Ukrainian.
    • Default mode – set default device mode: MENU Mode or PC Mode.
    • Rotate LCD – rotate screen for 180°.
    • Auto logout – see Settings chapter.
    • Screen saver – see Settings chapter.
    • Print delay – see Settings chapter.

    Get settings – get settings from device.

    Set settings – set device settings. Confirm by pressing device OK button.

    Backup – backup all users data. Enter new backup PIN code twice in the device (this code will be used for backup encryption) and save the file after backup has been read from the device. Thus, the backup is twice encrypted: all user data is already encrypted by the user’s PIN and additionally by backup PIN.

    Restore – restore user data from backup file. To do this, select the backup file created before and enter twice the PIN code that has been used for backup. Data will be restored from the file. ATTENTION!!! When restoring, the device first clears all data memory.

    Clear memory – clear data memory for all users. Confirm by pressing device OK button.

    Also, you can change Quantum Manager settings.

    • Minimize to tray – minimize application to system tray.
    • Auto start with PC – auto start application when PC starts.

Settings tab

  • Sometimes users may face small difficulties using our product. Most of users can cope with them on their own using instructions described in this section. For all other cases, we have customer support to help solve problems.

Troubleshooting

  • Quantum Manager cannot find your device when connected to PC. Try the following:

    • Try another USB cable.
    • Try connecting to another USB port.
    • Restart your computer.
    • Try connecting to another computer.

    If you connect the device to a new PC for the first time, operating system needs some time (up to 1 minute) for standard USB driver set up. Wait for the process to complete successfully before running Quantum Manager.

    Also, make sure that the new USB device appeared in the device manager:

    • PC mode – HID-compliant vendor-defined device. Could be called differently depending on the operating system.
    • MENU Mode – HID Keyboard Device. Could be called differently depending on the operating system.

Firmware update

  • When updating firmware after pressing the Start button, device enters update mode (HID Boot mode is displayed on the LCD), but Quantum Manager issues an error and the process is stopped.

    To solve this problem, close the error window and repeat the process again without disconnecting the device. If the error persists, disconnect-connect the device and try again. If an error occurs during the process, then the device will be in the upgrade mode immediately after the connection, and just click the Start button again.

    When you upgrade your device for the first time it takes some time to set up a standard USB driver, which can cause an error in Quantum Manager. Just repeat the attempt.

Lost PIN code

  • If you have forgotten your PIN code, unfortunately, we have no solution to that, and you will not be able to access your device in this case. Since the PIN code is never stored inside, but used as an encryption key only, it is impossible to decrypt data without this key, and there is no method for restoring the PIN code.

    You can try to retrieve PIN code by brute force, but after several unsuccessful attempts the waiting time will increase so much that further process will be practically impossible.

    However, you can use kill PIN (set to KILLEMALL by default, and we strongly recommend changing it), to erase all your data and get access to an empty device.

    To do this, enter kill PIN at startup, data will be permanently erased and a specific message will be displayed on the LCD. Then re-connect the device to get started. 2FA TOTP

  • Six dash characters —— are shown on the LCD in 2FA TOTP mode, instead of 2FA code.
    This is due to the fact that the absolute value of the current time is used to calculate this TOTP code. Since QUANTUM does not have a built-in battery this value is not saved after disconnecting the device.

    To solve this problem, connect the device to the PC in PC mode and run Quantum Manager, which automatically sets the correct time in the device by the first command. Now you can set device to MENU mode and use 2FA.

    We will create a special separate application (service) soon that detects device connection and sets the time automatically.

Identify keyboard for Mac OS

  • The first time you connect QUANTUM to a Mac OS, a keyboard setup window appears.

     

    Click Continue. A new window will appear, prompting you to click the left or right button next to the left or right Shift. From the device main menu select Settings > Mac OS Left Shift or Settings > Mac OS Right Shift respectively. QUANTUM will print the character “z” or “/” and the keyboard will be identified.
